Seeking Lighting Designer, Costume Designer, Sound Designer, Set/Props Designer.

Job Description Overview

The Fringe Curates/Presents Creative Team will collaborate with Capital Fringe from script selection through the rehearsal and production process of the Curated/Presents productions, presented in the 2019 Capital Fringe Festival. We are looking for committed individuals that want to work collaboratively on exciting new scripts in a repertory environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Consult, bearing in mind the goals and objective of the project, with Capital Fringe on the selection of works to be created and presented.
  • Collaborate with members of the Creative Team on the creation of the works.
  • Attend All Required Meetings, as scheduled. Prepare materials as listed:

Project Selection – feedback (via email and skype) to producers on script finalists

World-Building – Actively participate as a member of the Creative Team in group exploration on themes and possible ideas before starting your own design research.

Research/1st Production Meeting – written description of concepts, images, examples, and ideas pulled from “World-Building” exercises. Bounce ideas off the team, work to unify thematic elements.

Proposals/2nd Production Meeting – Present research choices for each specific area, discussion of any remaining questions with the team to unify concept and execution goals.

First Reads presentation – Present concepts and design to cast and crew at the 1st Reads, inspiring rehearsals and performance with actors.

Rehearsals – Attend rehearsals as needed, working with Creative Team to implement necessary needed design elements into rehearsals.

Final Production Meeting – Final choices presented, budget updated to reflect decisions and final selections. Any remaining needs discussed and plan for tech set.

Qualification

  • At least 2-3 years’ experience and expertise in design for theatrical productions in one or more of the following areas is required: lighting, costumes, Sound, and set/props.
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Grace and a sense of humor under pressure, enthusiasm for working as a team

Time Commitment & Compensation

The Fringe Curates/Presents Creative Team commitment is February through July with the following schedule:

  • Script selection: Feb
  • Script/Design Development: March/April
  • Rehearsals: May/June
  • Tech and Performances: July. Performances will take place in the Cradle at Arena Stage, the Mead Center for American Theater.

This is a contract position. The competitive salary is commensurate with experience. Due to the nature of the collaborative work involved, only candidates in the DMV area (District of Columbia and surrounding counties of Maryland and Virginia) are encouraged to apply.
